Corona virus cases have been reported in some states of the country.
COVID New Variant JN.1 Dr Sujeet Singh, Ex Director, NCDC
Covid cases in india : The threat of Corona virus is again looming in India. Along with many countries of the world, Corona cases are increasing every day in India too. Recently a new sub-variant of Covid has emerged. A case of JN.1 variant was reported in Kerala. TV9 has talked to Dr. Sujit Singh, former director of NCDC, about this variant. Dr. Sujit says that JN. Variant 1 is a sub-variant of the Omicron variant. It has also been found earlier in China, UK and USA. This variant has been detected since July. The mutation in it is in the spike protein region which is L 445S. There is a possibility of increase in transmission due to this mutation.
To view the transmission, one needs to view it in a community setting. Only after this will it be known how fast this variant is spreading. To identify this variant, states are instructed to increase surveillance. Meanwhile, it also has to be seen whether Covid cases are increasing in the hospital? If these are increasing then it needs to be seen whether it is due to JN.1 and there is some other reason.
Cases increasing in Singapore
Dr. Sujit said that data from some countries is definitely indicating that cases have increased due to JN.1. For example, Covid cases are increasing rapidly in Singapore and the reason for this is the new variant JN. Is 1. It is too early to say anything about India. The status of the population of every country is different, for example, the status of vaccination or the type of vaccine. Through this, the spread of Covid is assessed. It also has to be seen how much immunity is left among the people against Covid.
What is dangerous JN? 1 variant
Dr. Sujit said that right now he does not consider the new variant to be fatal. There is information about death due to Corona. If JN.1 is found in the samples of these cases, then it can be said that it is responsible for the deaths, but through genomic sequencing it will have to be seen which variant of Covid was present in the deceased. In such a situation, there is a need to increase sequencing.
