The scope of many diseases is increasing in the country. The graph of patients suffering from cancer, heart disease and stomach diseases is increasing with every new year. Among these diseases, there is also a disease which is spreading very fast in India, but less attention is being paid towards it. Here we are talking about PCOD i.e. Polycystic Ovary Disease occurring in women. The number of women suffering from this disease has been increasing in the country in the last decade. Women between the age of 16 years to 40 years are also falling victim to this.
According to the National Library of Medicine, one in five (20%) women in India suffers from PCOS. This disease is becoming a major cause of infertility. According to a report published by The Lancet in 2021, if PCOD is not treated, 15 to 20 percent of women may become victims of endometrial cancer. From this you can imagine how dangerous this disease is, although most of the women in India are not aware about this disease. Due to this, this disease takes a serious form in many cases and women become victims of infertility.
Here it is very important to know why the disease of PCOD is increasing so rapidly in India? How can women avoid this and how can it be treated?
Why is PCOD disease increasing rapidly?
About this Dr. Saloni Chadha, Onco Gynecologist at Safdarjung Hospital Has given information. Dr Saloni says that there is no specific reason for PCOD disease. Impaired lifestyle, mental stress, wrong eating habits, smoking and alcohol consumption are major risk factors for this disease.
The lifestyle of women has been deteriorating for the last few years. There is no fixed time for sleeping and waking up. The continuously deteriorating lifestyle is becoming the cause of PCOD. In some cases, this disease can also occur due to genetic reasons. That means it can be passed from one generation to another,
Dr. Saloni says that PCOD disease can occur from the age of 16 to 18 years and even after the age of 30 years. Due to this, the hormonal balance in women's body gets disturbed. Male hormones increase. Many types of problems start arising due to this. Hair starts growing on the face. More hair starts growing on many other parts of the body. The pattern of periods also gets spoiled. Periods do not come on time.
What other problems are there?
Due to PCOD, small cysts or lumps start forming in the ovaries. Because of these cysts it is difficult to conceive. This is why PCOD also becomes the cause of infertility. Due to this disease, insulin resistance also occurs in women. Because of this their cells are not able to use insulin properly. When cells are not able to use insulin properly, the demand for insulin in the body increases. To compensate for this, the pancreas produces more insulin. Problems related to obesity start occurring due to excess insulin production. With increasing obesity, there is a risk of developing sleep apnea. This condition causes frequent interruptions in breathing during the night, which disrupts sleep.
Sleep apnea is more common in women who are overweight, especially if they also have PCOS. The risk of sleep apnea in women who have both obesity and PCOD is 5 to 10 times higher than in women who do not have PCOD.
Symptoms like hormonal imbalance and unwanted hair growth caused by this disease have a negative impact on the mental health of women. Due to this, women become victims of anxiety and depression.
How is this disease identified?
Dr Saloni explains that doctors usually diagnose PCOD in women who have at least two of these three symptoms.
high androgen levels
periods not coming on time
cyst in ovary
If the doctor finds any of these problems then a pelvic examination is done. Apart from this, many types of blood tests are also done. These contain tests for cholesterol, insulin and triglyceride. An ultrasound is also done to examine the ovaries and uterus.
What is the treatment for PCOD?
Dr. Reema Dada, Professor at AIIMS, New Delhi It is said that this disease is treated through medicines and surgery. Apart from this, doctors advise you to make some changes in your lifestyle. They also decide the eating routine. For this, it is said to include green fruits and vegetables in the diet. It is advisable to increase the amount of fiber in the diet. Exercise is advised to maintain weight. Along with this, it is also advised to do Rog Yoga.
POCOID disease can be easily controlled through yoga. Doing yoga provides a lot of benefits. In AIIMS, work has been done to save many women suffering from PCOD from this disease through yoga. By doing yoga, obesity also remains under control and mental stress also reduces. Pranayam like Kapalbhati and Surya Namaskar prove to be very beneficial in this.
