Israel is continuously carrying out attacks in Gaza to eliminate Hamas. Meanwhile, US and Israeli officials are discussing the future of Gaza Strip. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Parliament that the government is discussing several options in this matter.
Blinken said- We cannot return to the old structure when Hamas ruled Gaza. Even Israel cannot control Gaza. Their officers themselves have accepted this. In such a situation, we are considering other possibilities in collaboration with other countries. Israeli officials have also said many times that they do not want to occupy Gaza.
America’s National Security Council told Bloomberg – We are not considering sending American troops to Gaza to maintain peace. There is also little hope that the Palestinian Authority present in the West Bank will be ready to run the government in Gaza.
First- The countries present in the area around Gaza should run the government. During this period, the armies of America, Britain, Germany and France will keep vigil. Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE can also be added to the countries included in the government.
Second- A peacekeeping force can be deployed in Gaza with the help of Multinational Force and Observer Group (MFO), which is currently deployed in the Sinai Peninsula on the Israel-Egypt border. This force is responsible for maintaining the agreement between Israel and Egypt. There are soldiers from about 13 countries in MFO. These include countries like America, Britain, France, Italy, Australia, Canada.
Third – The last option that is being considered is that a temporary government should be formed in Gaza under the supervision of the UN. With this, the UN guidelines issued to help the Palestinians will also be properly followed. However, according to some officials, Israel is not in favor of this option.
Israel angry with UN after Antonio’s statement
In fact, UN Chief Antonio Guterres had said a few days ago that it is not right for all Palestinians to be punished for Hamas attacks. Israel was enraged after this statement. The Israeli representative had demanded Guterres’ resignation. Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, had announced that Israel would not grant visas to UN officials.
Many former US officials and other organizations are in discussions with Israel and America regarding the government in Gaza. The Washington Institute for Near East Policy said an interim Palestinian government could be formed in Gaza. During this period, humanitarian aid will continue to be delivered to Gaza under UN supervision.
Discussion on the union of 5 Arab countries that have signed an agreement with Israel
Whereas Washington Institute Scholars wrote a note on October 17 saying – To establish law in Gaza, a federation of those 5 Arab countries can be formed, which also have peace agreements with Israel. These include countries like Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Bahrain, Morocco.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said- It is very important to find a long-term solution in Gaza. There will be a need for an effective government, which can restore law and order. In fact, all three options related to the government in Gaza can create a political challenge for America and the Gulf countries.
America does not want to send troops to Gaza
According to President Joe Biden, if even a small contingent of American troops in Gaza is harmed, it could also be politically dangerous. At the same time, there is no guarantee whether Arab countries will be ready to play their role in the government of Gaza or not. The Biden government believes that ultimately only a separate Palestinian state can end this entire issue, but at present there has been no discussion regarding how to reach that point.
