The State Government has already made rules in this regard in collaboration with the Women, Child and Social Welfare Department. The key words of the Central Act being ‘Equal opportunity in all respects’ have been given priority in the ‘West Bengal Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights)’ Rules. While some state governments including Karnataka have reserved 1% posts for the third gender in their jobs. The West Bengal government says that no separate reservation is being made for them in government jobs to provide equal opportunities.

Vacancy for the post of Sub-Inspector in Kolkata Police
According to the new rules, the age of the applicant for the post of sub-inspector should be more than 20 years and less than 27 years. There will be a relaxation of five years in the upper age limit for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and three years for OBC or Other Backward Classes and third gender applicants. The state government has also fixed the physical height and weight in this job. In the physical fitness test, male applicants will have to complete 800 meters in 3 minutes, 400 meters in 2 minutes for women and 400 meters in 1 minute 40 seconds for third gender.

Steps taken to settle the complaints of third gender
According to the new rules, an application for gender identity card can be made to the District Magistrate by following the specified procedure. The applicant will get that identity card after the verification stage within 60 days of the application. Third gender should get equal rights. All basic facilities including toilets, transport should be ensured for them. The privacy of gender identity must be protected. There will also be a separate mechanism for reporting any complaints. In such case, if any complaint is received, the concerned officer will look into it within 15 days and the head of the department will take action within 15 days of receiving the report. The state government will create a separate department for grievance redressal.
