Former Union Minister and former BJP President in West Bengal Satyavrat Mukherjee has been posthumously awarded Padma Bhushan. At one time Satyavrat Mukherjee was a well-known name in national politics. Especially in West Bengal, he was counted as a prominent face of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Satyavrat Mukherjee died in Kolkata at the age of 90 in March 2023.
Satyavrat Mukherjee was born on 8 May 1932 in Sylhet, Assam (now Bangladesh). He was educated at Calcutta University. Apart from this, he studied Bar-at-Law from The Honorable Society of Lincoln's Inn. He did further studies from Regent Street Polytechnic in London. Satyavrat Mukherjee was elected MP from Krishnanagar seat of West Bengal on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections. Before this he was the Additional Solicitor General of India.
Was famous by the name of 'Jolu Babu'
Satyavrat Mukherjee was known as 'Jolu Babu' in Bengal BJP. He was elected MP at such a time in 1999. When BJP had no support base in Bengal. Although at that time BJP was in alliance with Trinamool Congress (TMC). After becoming an MP, he was made Minister of State in the government of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He was considered one of the people close to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
