india alliance
After the assembly elections of five states of the country, now a meeting of the opposition alliance ‘INDIA’ is to be held. Before the elections, Congress was thinking of increasing its bargaining power with the intention of getting better results in these states, but after losing power in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and defeat in Madhya Pradesh, the political ground has become narrow for Congress. At the same time, the political atmosphere which was earlier in favor of the opposition alliance INDIA has now faded. Congress had hoped that by performing better in the assembly elections of five states, it would take the driving seat of INDIA alliance, but after the results, it is no longer in a position to stake claim.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had called a meeting of all 28 constituent parties of the opposition alliance INDIA on Wednesday. West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has refused to attend the meeting of the opposition alliance citing her scheduled schedule. He said that I did not know about the meeting of INDIA alliance nor did I receive any call. A two-day program has already been decided in Bengal, which has to be attended.
From Mamata Banerjee to Akhilesh Yadav and Nitish Kumar had decided to send their party leaders instead of attending the meeting themselves, but the way one party after another was withdrawing from the meeting. In such a situation, is this the reason why Congress has to postpone this meeting? The picture of when the meeting of the opposition alliance will take place is not clear.

Is everything okay in INDIA alliance?
Nitish Kumar, considered the architect of the opposition alliance INDIA, himself had refused to participate. Not only Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has also decided to send SP General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav instead of attending the event himself. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is also sending JDU President Lallan Singh and Sanjay Jha to the meeting in his place. In such a situation, it is clear that everything is not going well in the INDIA alliance. A rift had arisen between Congress and Akhilesh regarding seat sharing in Madhya Pradesh elections, whereas Mamata Banerjee is already not ready for friendship with the Left.
This meeting of the opposition alliance INDIA was being held after a gap of three months after the previous meeting held in Mumbai on 31 August and 1 September. But, leaders of the three main allies of the opposition alliance refused to attend, due to which the Congress had to come on the backfoot and postpone the meeting.
The exercise to unite opposition parties across the country to counter BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections started in Patna on June 23. In the first meeting held under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, the script was written to bring the opposition parties on one platform. Opposition parties agreed to contest the elections together. After this, in the second meeting held in Bengaluru on 17-18 July, the opposition alliance was named Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).
In the third meeting held in Mumbai at the end of August, various coordination committees were formed and some joint decisions were also taken, which have not yet been implemented on the ground. Due to the assembly elections of five states, the meeting of the opposition alliance was not being held, regarding which Nitish Kumar had expressed his displeasure. The elections of five states, which are being called the semi-finals of the Lok Sabha elections, were the first big test of India. It was in this that disunity and conflict came to the surface. The parties involved in the alliance pitted against each other.

‘Congress’s defeat happened because of its ‘arrogance”
When the results of five elections came, Nitish Kumar’s JDU said that Congress’s defeat was due to its ‘arrogance’. TMC has said that its defeat was due to ‘zamindari attitude’. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has also criticized Congress. In such a situation, Akhilesh’s separation from Mamata Banerjee is an indication of this. The coordination between Mamta and Akhilesh is also good. In such a situation, he too can move forward on his path.
Congress weakened in INIDA alliance due to defeat
Congress’s position in the opposition alliance INIDA has weakened due to being reduced to only Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh in the country. Regional powers including SP and TMC are feeling that when Congress is continuously weakening, there is no benefit in staying with it or giving it more seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Omar Abdullah has also sarcastically said that Congress has remembered the India alliance after three months, when it has lost the elections in three states.
Congress’s base in UP is weakest and its dependence is on other regional parties including SP. The crisis has deepened after the defeat in three states. In such a situation, the atmosphere which was in favor of the opposition alliance till three months ago, has faded due to the victory of BJP in three states. Opposition leaders have also started talking in hushed tones about PM Modi scoring a hat-trick in power. JDU MP Sunil Kumar Pintu even said that if Modi is there then it is possible.
