Haryana State Women’s Commission has filed charges against Professor Samina Dalwai of OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat for violating the privacy of students. Apart from this, instructions have been given to the DGP of Haryana Police to register an FIR for harassing students on the basis of religion and ideology.
Professor Dalwai of the Law Department is accused of pressurizing third year students, especially female students, to create a profile ID on the dating app Bumble. When the students refused, he allegedly advised them to make fake IDs. The girl students were even suggested to use the picture of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to create a fake profile.
The professor allegedly made them open the app, after which the students accused him of violating their privacy. The female professor also put pressure on the girl students to make friends with people of a particular caste profile. The Haryana Women Commission had directed the professor to appear before the commission, but she did not attend the hearing and instead sent her lawyer.
Women Commission chairperson Renu Bhatia rejected the application made by the lawyer to allow Dalwai to appear through video-conferencing. This was the second time that the professor did not attend the hearing. In an email to the commission on December 6, Professor Dalwai said he had assumed the case had been closed as the university had sent the action taken report.
Women’s Commission talked to 180 students
Haryana State Women’s Commission, after collecting all the facts and talking to the students who have accused the professor, has instructed the Haryana DGP to register an FIR in this matter. After students tagged her on Twitter, the Haryana State Commission for Women chairperson had visited the university on November 7 and recorded interviews of 180 students.
Now in a letter to Sonipat Police Commissioner and DGP Haryana, the Commission said that creating a fake account in the name of a well-known political personality like Rahul Gandhi is fraud, dishonesty and impersonation. We have solid evidence to support our claims, including video recordings of students who testified before the commission. Students have bravely come forward to share their experiences and expose this heinous act of misconduct by the professor.
In the letter ordering the registration of FIR, the Women’s Commission said that the safety, security and dignity of female students cannot be compromised merely because they have decided not to appear before the Commission. Professor Dalwai was issued a show cause notice by the university on November 8.
In her reply she said that her subject module dealt with the complex interplay of gender, sexuality and desire in shaping and influencing caste, class and various other social identities. To gain a deeper understanding of our experiences of desire, and these concepts, they collectively created a Bumble account.
The professor had also said that his email sent to Professor Mansi Kumar on the Israel-Palestine issue had inadvertently hurt the sentiments of Hindus. The university had issued him a warning letter on November 13. Haryana State Women’s Commission, along with taking strict action on this entire matter, summoned all the Vice Chancellors of all 47 private and government universities of Haryana to Chandigarh and in a meeting they directly said that this kind of conduct by professors with students should not be tolerated. This can be done and universities should make their own protocol to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future.
University gave information to Women Commission
An official statement was given by OP Jindal Global University on this entire matter. Chief Communication Officer of the University, Anshu Mohan said that a notice has been issued to the professor in this matter and a report has been prepared and sent on the information and answers sought by the Haryana Women Commission from the University. He is not aware about the FIR lodged against the professor, but he is cooperating with the Women’s Commission on the entire matter, but the anti-national slogans being raised inside the university are being reported, nothing like that happened in the university campus. .
Considering the entire matter as a very serious matter, Haryana Women Commission has decided to take strict action so that such incidents are not repeated in any university campus of Haryana in future.
