The number of students studying abroad from India is increasing every year. It has been told by the government that more than 30 lakh Indians have gone abroad in the last 6 years.

The Central Government has told in the Parliament that there has been a tremendous increase in the number of students going to study abroad in the last year. The Union Ministry of Education has revealed in the Lok Sabha that in comparison to 2021, about 3 lakh more students have gone out of the country for foreign education in 2022. Education Ministry Told that during 2017 to 2022, the number of Indians going abroad for higher education has been more than 30 lakhs. This information was shared by Union Minister of State for Education Subhash Sarkar in a written reply to a question by JD(U) MP Rajeev Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh and others.
The Union Minister of State for Education said, ‘The Bureau of Immigration, Ministry of Home Affairs, handles the departure and arrival data of Indians. But there is no index regarding the category of Indians going abroad for the purpose of higher education. The purpose of Indians going abroad for higher education is entered either verbally or at the time of immigration clearance depending on the type of visa of their destination country.
The details of the last 6 years are as follows –
- In the year 2017, about 4 lakh 54 thousand 9 students went to study abroad.
- In the year 2018, 5 lakh 17 thousand 998 students went to study abroad.
- In the year 2019, 5 lakh 86 thousand 337 students went to study abroad.
- In the year 2020, 2 lakh 59 thousand 655 students went to study abroad.
- In the year 2021, 4 lakh 44 thousand 553 students went to study abroad.
At the same time, in the last year 2022, there has been a tremendous increase in the number of students going to study abroad and a total of 7 lakh 50 thousand 365 have gone to study abroad. The Union Ministry of Education has informed in the Lok Sabha that there is no detail of the estimated expenditure being incurred by the students who have gone to study abroad every year.
But the Union Ministry of Education has told that the UGC has drafted a regulation regarding the opening of Indian campuses of foreign universities and has sought the opinion of all the stakeholders, whose last date is 20 February. Once the opinion of the stakeholders is received, the central government and the UGC can take important decisions regarding the opening of campuses of foreign universities in India.
