Saudi Arabia’s powerful crown prince has traditionally been nominated as prime minister by the king in a major reshuffle announced last Tuesday night. Sultan Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud yesterday issued a royal decree appointing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the country’s new prime minister.
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman or MBS, who has been the de facto ruler of the kingdom for many years, has previously served as deputy prime minister and defense minister under Sultan Salman. Now his younger brother Khalid bin Salman has been brought in as the new Defense Minister, who was earlier Deputy Defense Minister.
The second son of the Sultan, Prince Khalid bin Salman, has been made the new Defense Minister. Now Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Banayan has been appointed as the new Minister of Education in a new cabinet reshuffle under royal decree. According to a royal decree issued by Sultan Salman, published by the official Saudi Press Agency, no changes have been made to other important ministries, including interior, foreign and energy.
Ministers whose posts have not been reshuffled under the new order include Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Interior Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz, Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Investment Minister Khaled Al- Falih and Finance Minister Mohamed al-Jadananda.
Prince Mohammed, who turned 37 last month, has been in line to succeed his father as sultan since 2017. He became the Defense Minister of the country in 2015.
Saudi Arabia has long sought to put an end to speculation over the health of 86-year-old Sultan Salman, who has been ruling the world’s top oil exporter since 2015. In 2017, Saudi Arabia dismissed reports and growing speculation that the sultan was planning to abdicate his throne for Prince Mohammed.
According to state media reports, Sultan Salman has been hospitalized twice so far this year, most recently in May for a week in which he underwent several tests including a colonoscopy.
