Europe Gas Crisis: The Ukraine war has made it costly for Europe to screw up with Russia. Gas prices across Europe have been on fire. Russia is burning large amounts of natural gas in the open, irking all of Europe. According to one analysis, a Russian plant near the border with Finland is burning an estimated $10 million worth of gas every day. According to experts, the gas was earlier exported to Germany. Germany’s ambassador to Britain said Russia was burning the gas because they could not sell it anywhere else. Now scientists are concerned about large amounts of carbon dioxide and the soot it produces, which could increase the rate at which Arctic ice melts. In such a situation, the whole of Europe is facing a double whammy due to taking tension from Russia.
Russia wasting 43.4 lakh cubic meters of gas every day
According to media reports, the latest analysis by Rystad Energy indicates that about 43.4 million cubic meters of gas is being wasted in the flames every day in Russia. The gas is being supplied by a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in Portovaya, northwest of St. Petersburg. This was revealed when some citizens of Finland saw a large flame burning on the horizon near the border in early summer. It was later discovered that this was a gas plant located in Portovaya, Russia, where the natural gas that was dumped was being eliminated by burning it in the air. Portovaya is located close to a compressor station at the start of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline that carries gas from under the sea to Germany.

What is the reason for the accumulation of natural gas in large quantities?
In mid-July, Russia cut off gas supplies to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline. Then Russia said that European sanctions were responsible for this. On the other hand, Germany rejected Russia’s claim, saying that it was a political move by Moscow after the attack on Ukraine, so that it could put pressure on Europe. However, it was not possible for Russia to immediately stop the production of gas despite the supply shutdown. Due to this huge amount of natural gas had accumulated in Russian gas stations and pipelines.
Haven’t seen so much waste of gas till today
According to the researchers, they have seen a significant increase in the heat released from this gas plant in Russia since June. It is produced by the burning of natural gas. Gas burning is common in processing plants. Usually this is done for technical or security reasons. But, burning of gas on such a large scale is a matter of fear for the experts. Dr Jessica McCarty, an expert in satellite data from the University of Miami in Ohio, said: “I’ve never seen an LNG plant burning so much gas. Since around June, we have seen continuous fire emanating from the chimney of the plant, which is yet to be extinguished. It is throwing very unusually high flames.
