Earlier on Friday, Pakistan’s deposed Prime Minister Imran Khan appeared before the sessions court to personally apologize to the woman judge, Jeba Chaudhry. However, when Khan and his lawyer appeared in the court of the judge concerned, the staff present there – court reader Chaudhry Yasir Ayaz and stenographer Farooq informed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief that the judicial magistrate was on leave. After this, Khan left a message with Ayaz for the lady judge.
In a video shared by PTI on Twitter, he can be heard telling the court reader, “I have come to apologize to Judicial Magistrate Jeba Choudhary.” He said, ‘You inform Madam Jeba Chaudhary that Imran Khan had come and if his (Khan’s) words have hurt his feelings, then he wants to apologize.’ After this the PTI chief left the court room.
Next hearing on October 3
The Islamabad High Court has scheduled Khan’s next hearing in the contempt case on October 3 and it is not clear whether the court will be satisfied with his visit to seek an apology from Additional Sessions Judge Chaudhry. Earlier in the day a local district and sessions court confirmed his interim bail in the case registered against Khan for violating Section 144 by holding a rally in Islamabad on August 20. Additional Sessions Judge Zafar Iqbal heard the matter and granted him permanent bail on a surety of Rs 5,000 after the arguments of Khan’s lawyer Babar Awan. Earlier, the last hearing in this case was held on 22 September. During this, Khan had said that he did not intend to threaten the judge and was ready to meet him (Chowdhary) in person and apologize.
What was the whole matter?
Imran Khan had allegedly threatened a woman judge during a public rally in Islamabad on 20 August. During the rally, Khan had threatened to register a case against top police officials, the Election Commission and political opponents for the behavior of his colleague Shahbaz Gill. Gill was arrested on charges of sedition. The woman judge had granted Gill’s two-day custody at the request of the Capital Territory Police.
After this Imran Khan threatened the woman judge. Khan had told Jeba Choudhary (women magistrate), ‘Be ready as action will be taken against her.’ Hours after the speech, former Pakistan PM Khan was booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act for threatening the police, judiciary and other government institutions at his rally. After this, contempt proceedings were started against Khan in the Islamabad High Court. (with input from language)
