India-Middle East-Europe Corridor: India-Middle East and Europe Corridor (IMEC) has been in the headlines since the G20 Summit. This is being considered a big step towards increasing connectivity. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given his reaction regarding this corridor. He has described this corridor as an important opportunity for the Israeli people. He said that this corridor will be their biggest project till date and it will move forward with mutual cooperation. He believes that the Middle East and the entire world will change as a result of this economic corridor.
Israel calls economic corridor a game changer
“Israel will be the center of an unprecedented global project that will connect infrastructure from Asia to Europe,” Netanyahu said in a video conference late Saturday. “I appreciate the statements made by the US, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, EU, France, Italy and Germany.” According to Netanyahu, this project will have a significant impact on Israel, the Middle East and the rest of the world.
economic corridor Türkiye came out in protest
On the other hand, Turkey has opposed this project. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he was aware that many countries were trying to increase their influence by building trade corridors. But, no corridor is possible without Türkiye. In fact, since returning to Turkey, Erdogan’s tone seems to have changed. Speaking to media personnel on Monday, Erdogan had said, “We say there is no corridor without Turkey. Türkiye is an important country for production and trade. “The most convenient line for traffic from east to west passes through Turkey.” It is clear from his words that he is not happy with this project.
Connectivity will get a boost from IMEEC
In fact, the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEEC) transport project has been approved in the G20 summit chaired by India. This corridor will connect India with Greece and Europe through UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel. This corridor will be built bypassing Turkey. Along with other G20 members, the European Union, India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United States and others also signed the agreement.
