The Sri Lanka cricket team has achieved its rhythm in the Asia Cup. The Sri Lankan team, which reached the Super Four by defeating Bangladesh in a do or die match, won the second match in a row. In the very first match of the Super Four, Sri Lanka faced Afghanistan and Dasun Shanaka’s team defeated the Afghan team playing strong cricket by 5 wickets. With the help of strong innings from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka achieved the target of 176 runs from Afghanistan in the 20th over.
In the first match of the Super Four in Sharjah on Saturday, 3 September, Afghanistan got into a strong momentum with two consecutive victories, while Sri Lanka somehow made their place in this round. In such a situation, Mohammad Nabi’s team had landed as a favorite in this match as well. Team’s opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz (84 runs, 45 balls, 4 fours, 6 sixes) also ensured it with a bang. Gurbaz got a lifeline in the third over when Danushka Gunatilka stepped on the boundary after taking a catch. After this the young batsman thrashed Sri Lanka a lot.
The 20-year-old wicket-keeper batsman continuously smashed Sri Lanka in the tournament. The deadly right-handed striker completed his fifty in just 22 balls, which was his fifth fifty in T20 Internationals. As long as Gurbaz’s attack was on, it seemed that Afghanistan would score a big score. Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran (40 runs, 38 balls) shared a 93-run partnership for the second wicket.
However, after Gurbaz was dismissed for 139 in the 16th over, the Afghan batsmen failed to put up a big total. Fast bowler Dilshan Madhushanka (2/37) was the most successful for Sri Lanka.
