    One MLA-One Pension in Punjab: The law which has been running for more than one pension in Punjab for years has come to an end today and the Governor has approved the ‘One MLA, One Pension’ law. A notification has been issued by the government in this regard. That is, from now on the MLAs of Punjab will get pension only for one term. Significantly, the ‘One MLA One Pension’ bill was passed by the Mann government of Punjab in the House. After this, Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit refused to sign the ‘One MLA, One Pension’ ordinance. However, today the bill has now been approved by the Governor.

At the same time, the leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party have called it a positive step of the government. In the midst of all this, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has given detailed information by tweeting. The Chief Minister tweeted and wrote, ‘I am very happy to inform Punjabis that Hon’ble Governor has approved the “One MLA-One Pension” bill…Govt has issued notification. This will save a lot of tax for the public.

    In fact, according to this new rule, every person who has been an MLA will be paid a pension of Rs 60000 per month and dearness allowance (which is applicable to Punjab government pensioners) thereon. If a person who, while serving as a member, attains the age of 65 years, 75 years and 80 years, on attaining such age, he shall be entitled to an increase of 5 per cent, 10 per cent and 15 per cent respectively in the initial pension. .     The new law will lighten the burden on the state exchequer. According to a report, MLAs in Punjab get a pension of around Rs 75,000 per month. At present, more than 325 former MLAs are getting pension in Punjab. Earlier the MLAs were drawing multiple pensions based on the number of posts won in the elections. The MLAs were getting pension ranging from Rs 3.50 lakh to Rs 5.25 lakh per month, which was proving to be a big burden on the exchequer of Punjab.
