A Delhi court has sentenced former coal secretary H C Gupta to three years in jail in a case related to irregularities in the allocation of a coal mine in Maharashtra. Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj has also sentenced KS Krofa, former Joint Secretary, Ministry of Coal, to two years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him, a lawyer with knowledge of the matter said. Gupta has also been fined Rs 1 lakh.
The court had convicted both of them of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption in the case related to the allocation of Lohara East coal mine. He was sentenced to four years in jail for the crime and also fined him two lakh rupees. At the same time, the company has also been directed to pay a separate fine of Rs 2 lakh.

HC Gupta was earlier convicted in three other coal scam cases as well. In these cases, the petition filed by Gupta against the sentence is pending in the Delhi High Court. Gupta is currently in jail. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), between 2005 and 2011 the accused had hatched a criminal conspiracy against the Indian government. The CBI also said that the company in its application had claimed total income of Rs 120 crore, while its total income was Rs 3.3 crore. The Supreme Court had on August 25, 2014 annulled all the allotments of coal mines.

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court had reserved its verdict three days ago on the punishment of former coal secretary HC Gupta and former joint secretary in the coal ministry KS Krofa, who were convicted in the 2012 Maharashtra coal block allocation scam case. After hearing the arguments of both the sides, Special Judge Arun Bhardwaj had ordered to pronounce the verdict today.
The case was registered by the CBI on 20 September 2012.
In the 197-page judgment, the court had said that HC Gupta, in three meetings with the former prime minister’s chief secretary, gave him false information regarding the allocation of Lohara East coal block in Maharashtra.
