New Delhi. Announcing the election schedule for the election of its new president, the Congress on Sunday said it would vote on October 17, if required.
After the decision was taken in the meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the highest policy-making body of the Congress, chaired by party President Sonia Gandhi, President of the party’s Central Election Committee Madhusudan Mistry, General Secretary Organization KC Venugopal and Head of Communications Department Jairam Ramesh at the party headquarters. Announced the election programs for the post of President in a joint press conference.
Mr. Mistry said that the notification for the election of Congress President will be issued on September 22 and from September 24 to September 30, 11 to three nominations can be made every day. The last date for filing nominations is 30 September. The verification of the names of the candidates will be done on October 1 and the list of candidates will be released by the evening of the same day. Candidates can withdraw their names till October 8. The final list of qualified candidates will be released on October 8 at 5 pm.
Mr. Mistry said that candidates will be able to campaign in their favor from Saturday, October 8 to Sunday, October 16. He said that if there is more than one candidate in the fray, then voting will be held from 10 am to 4 pm on Monday, October 17 and the results will be declared on October 19. Individuals who wish to nominate for this post can do so at the Congress Headquarters.
He said that more than 9000 delegates will vote for the post of Congress President. If there is only one candidate for the post of Congress President, in that case the election results will also be declared on the same day. Shri Venugopal said that these election programs were approved in the meeting of the Working Committee chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He said that the rally on inflation will be held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on September 4 and on September 7, the Bharat Jodo Padyatra will start from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. Any person can nominate for the post of Congress President and the process of election will start from September 24.
When asked whether there was any discussion in the Working Committee regarding the resignation of senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, Shri Jairam Ramesh said that only the election of Congress President was discussed in the CWC. The resolution which was placed before the committee for the election of Congress President was passed as it is. He said that Congress is the only party in the country where elections for the post of President have been held, are happening and will continue to happen.
