Supreme Court lawyer from Mumbai Mahim Dargah But every year the issue of giving salute by Mumbai Police has been raised. Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte of the Supreme Court question of whether under which constitutional or protocol mumbai police Every year at the dargah of Mahim’s Pir Hazrat Makdum Shah, she gives a gun salute at the beginning of the Urs program. He has written a letter to the Mumbai Police Commissioner raising this issue. He has appealed in his letter that this practice should be stopped as soon as possible.
Gunaratna Sadavarte has also sent this letter written to the Police Commissioner to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Sadavarte’s demand to stop this practice is getting support from the organization named ‘Police Family of India’.
Why not salute Siddhivinayak, Ram Mandir and Dr. Ambedkar’s Chaitya Bhoomi?
Lawyer Sadavarte says that why Mumbai Police salute only a program related to a particular religion? When there is no custom of such salute in any program of Ram Mandir. The salute is not given to the Siddhi Vinayak Temple, which is a few kilometers away from Mahim Dargah. The Chaitya Bhoomi of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, which is just a short distance away, is not saluted, then what is the basis for saluting the Mahim Dargah?
No constitutional basis, no protocol, then why the police salute to the dargah?
Sadavarte argues that according to the Bombay Police Act Manual, a martyr can be given a salute. Salute can be given to any person associated with the police department or sitting on constitutional posts. Or salute can be given to those whose names are in the record of Blue Book. That is, those who can be saluted under the protocol, there is no name of any religious place in them.
Not opposed to any sect, but cares about the constitution
In such a situation, on what basis the program of the Dargah is being saluted. If this is a tradition that has been going on for years, then this tradition can be stopped or it can be started for places related to other religions. But the objection is that this tradition has started for the Dargah of Mahim, why not for the places of faith associated with any other sect? Sadavarte said that he is not opposing any sect, but being a student of the constitution, he is concerned about the prestige of the constitution and the police. That’s why they are demanding that the proposed salute of Mumbai Police at Mahim Dargah in December this year should be immediately banned.
