Election mercury has already risen in the state. The regional parties National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, BJP and other political parties there are continuously organizing rallies to get closer to the voters. For several months, regional parties have been demanding statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and holding of assembly elections. All the parties are accusing the BJP of indirectly ruling the Union Territory through the Lieutenant Governor. PDP spokesperson Suhail Bukhari said, “The Election Commission has no excuse now to delay the assembly elections. The BJP has deprived Jammu and Kashmir of an elected government for four years. The Election Commission should now come out with the election schedule.”
Power vacant after fall of BJP-PDP government
The BJP-led central government has said that assembly elections will be held first in Jammu and Kashmir, after that if everything goes well, then statehood will be given to Jammu and Kashmir again. Earlier this month, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman hinted at the possible restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu and Kashmir has been functioning without an elected government since 2018. The then PDP-BJP coalition government fell after the BJP walked out of the coalition led by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti.
There is no normal situation in Jammu and Kashmir
Since then the Central Government is directly running this Union Territory. There has been a change of power three times in the Raj Bhavan in four years. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has reduced the number of advisors from four to only one. Terrorist attacks on migrant workers and minority Kashmiri Pandits kept security agencies on high alert in 2022… At least six members of the minority Hindu community have been killed by terrorists in Kashmir so far this year. These attacks prove hollow the official claim of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. This situation may force the Central Government and the Election Commission to take a decision against holding elections in the Union Territory.
7 lakh new voters added
The Election Commission has completed the exercise of revising the voter list of Jammu and Kashmir following the recommendation of the Jammu and Kashmir Delimitation Commission. After this exercise, about 7 lakh new voters have been added in the union territory and their total number has increased to 8359771. The revision of voter list was the last step in preparing the roadmap for holding the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. With its completion, the ball is now in the court of the Election Commission and the Central Government.
