49th CJI UU Lalit: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was today sworn in as the 49th Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Justice UU Lalti at Rashtrapati Bhavan. PM Modi was also present on this occasion. Let us inform that CJI NV Raman retired yesterday (August 26). The new Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit will have a tenure of less than three months and he will retire on November 8.
Justice UU Lalit was appointed straight from the bar
Justice Lalit was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court in August 2014. He became a judge directly from the bar. Justice S.M. Lalit is the second such Chief Justice after Sikri became the 13th Chief Justice from the Bar in 1971. Justice Lalit was born on 9 November 1957 in Solapur, Maharashtra. He started practicing law from the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in June 1983. He practiced in the Bombay High Court till December 1985, before moving to Delhi in 1986.

Justice Lalit served as Soli J.J. from October 1986 to 1992. Worked with Sorabji and was on the panel of lawyers of India during the period when Sorabji was the Attorney General of India. From 1992 to 2002, he practiced as Advocate-on-record and was designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in April 2004. He was appointed as amicus curiae on many important issues including forest matters, vehicular pollution, pollution of Yamuna etc. He was appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI under the orders of the Supreme Court to try 2G cases.
Have heard triple talaq and other important decisions
Justice UU Lalit, the new CJI of India, had delivered many important decisions as a judge of the Supreme Court. The most important of these include triple talaq, the Travancore royal family’s claim on the Padmanabhaswamy temple in Kerala and the laws related to POCSO.
