Muthuvel Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa, two stalwarts of southern politics who did not like each other at all. Hatred so much that it was not even shared together in a public forum. There was such enmity between the two which is rarely seen in politics. Both were well-known and established leaders of the South, the public also gave them love but the paths remained different. Both never even smiled after seeing each other.
Many revelations were made by Vasanthi, a senior political analyst from Tamil Nadu and author of a book on Jayalalithaa, on why there was so much hatred for each other between the two. Today is the death anniversary of Jayalalithaa, who created history from films to politics. He died on 5 December 2016 at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. Know, what was the real reason for the enmity between Karunanidhi and him…
How deep were the roots of hatred?
In the BBC report, Vasanthi says, Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa did not just have an issue of disliking each other, they absolutely hated each other. There have been many reasons for this.
Let’s start with Karunanidhi first. Karunanidhi believed that Jayalalithaa did not belong to the Dravidian culture. She did not move ahead in politics according to a rank. This was because MG Ramachandran, whom Jayalalithaa considered her mentor, first broke away from Karunanidhi’s party DMK and then formed her own party AIADMK. Jayalalithaa directly became his secretary. The third biggest reason was Jayalita being a Brahmin. DMK has always been fighting against Brahmins.
Because of these things, the roots of hatred became so deep that whenever something went wrong in Tamil Nadu, Karananidhi blamed Jayalalithaa for it. He even sent Jayalita to jail on charges of corruption. When she came back to power, Karunanidhi got her arrested at midnight.

The incident when Jayalalithaa took oath
Vasanthi says, in 1989, when the then chief minister Karunanidhi was presenting the budget, Jayalalithaa opposed him as the leader of the opposition. Protests started increasing in the assembly. During this someone picked up the budget file and threw it towards Karunanidhi and his spectacles broke. Taking revenge for this, some person pulled Jayalalithaa’s saree from the treasury bench.
Jayalalithaa termed this incident as an unforgivable insult and took an oath on the spot that she would return to the assembly only when Karunanidhi was out of power. Only one day came when he returned to power.
What was the impact of their enmity on Tamil Nadu?
Senior political analyst Malan says that the enmity between the two affected Tamil Nadu. Since 1967 when DMK came to power, no other national party has got the pleasure of power in the state. AIADMK broke this cycle. When Jayalalithaa announced to contest the elections, the competition between the two increased so much that she even wrote about distribution of free goods in her manifestos.
Alam was that one party would talk about distributing one egg every week in the mid-day meal, while the other party would announce to distribute eggs in schools 5 days a week. Not only this, the matter reached to distribution of color TV, mixer grinder and laptop. The public got the benefit of the rivalry of both. Jayalalithaa may have been from Karnataka, but she tried to be a complete human being with Tamil Nadu.
