Parliament membership of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been cancelled. The Surat court had sentenced him to 2 years imprisonment for his remarks about the Modi community. Within 24 hours after the sentence was pronounced, the Lok Sabha Secretariat canceled Rahul Gandhi’s membership of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi was an MP from Wayanad seat of Kerala. The Congress leaders are shocked at the cancellation of his membership and are calling Rahul Gandhi’s membership an inauspicious sign which threatens Indian democracy.
The trouble is that with the end of the membership of the Parliament, Rahul Gandhi will also stop getting those facilities which are being given to him by the Parliament. The salary and other allowances received by Rahul Gandhi will also be stopped. Now he will be entitled only to pension and the same facilities will be given to him which are given to a former MP.
Salary and allowances available to an MP
- Salary and Allowances : MPs get Rs 1 lakh per month as basic salary, according to the Lok Sabha website, members are also given a daily allowance of Rs 2,000. However, for daily allowance, the members have to sign the register kept in the Parliament House. The MP gets Rs 49,000 per month as constituency allowance, apart from this Rs 54,000 is also paid for office allowance. Some part of this allowance is fixed for stationery and postal items, the rest is given to the person hired to assist the Member of Parliament.
- Travel allowance : Traveling allowance is granted to a Member of Parliament for traveling from his residence to his place of work and back to his residence if he is attending a Parliamentary meeting, Parliament or performing his duties as a Member of Parliament. However, there is a limit to this. The MP can travel in first class air-conditioned vehicle of any train at any time, his colleague is also given free travel in AC second class. If the MP travels by air, then a maximum of 34 air journeys can be done free of cost in a year. If he travels less than this in a year, the balance is added to the next year. The relatives of the MP can also travel by air 8 times in a year to meet him. If a member is traveling by road, then Rs 16 per km is paid.
- Accommodation : A permanent residence is also provided to the leader elected as a member of the Lok Sabha, until permanent accommodation is provided, arrangements are made for that member to stay in government guest houses and hotels. The flat, hostel accommodation or bungalow provided to the MP is completely free, only a nominal license fee has to be paid. If one’s membership is terminated, it may take a maximum of one month to vacate the accommodation.
- other facilities : Members are paid Rs 60,000 every three months for sofa covers, washing of curtains and maintenance of furniture in the residence. For the furniture which is not permanent, there is a provision of giving 15 thousand rupees separately. If the MP takes any additional facility, electronic item or anything else, then 25% less fee has to be paid in it.
- Telephone and mobile facilities : The Member of Parliament is provided with three telephone facilities, one for the residence, the other for the office and the third for the residence or constituency. 50 thousand calls are free on each telephone during a year. These telephone calls are linked together, that means the Member of Parliament can make a total of 150000 free calls from these three phones. Parliament Parliament is entitled to the facility of BSNL or any other mobile operator with roaming facility. The calls made by the member from the mobile phone will be adjusted in those free 1.5 lakh calls.
- Water and Electricity: 4,000 kilo liters of water and 50,000 units of free electricity are given every year to a member living in a house allotted to Parliament or in a private house in Delhi. If a member uses less electricity and water in this, then it is adjusted in the next year.
- medical facilities : Members of Parliament get the same medical facilities as are given to Class-I officers of the civil service. There is a center in the Parliament itself to meet the first aid requirement.
- Income Tax Exemption: No income tax is deducted on the salary and allowances received by the Member of Parliament. There is no income tax on the daily and traveling allowance of the MP.
- Right to enter Parliament: The Member of Parliament is issued such an RAF tag by the House so that he can enter the House without any hindrance. This tag is also given to the family members of the member.
- Government Vehicle : If the Member of Parliament wishes, then a government vehicle is also provided to him by the House, for this there is also a transport desk in the Parliament. For this, bringing the MP from his residence and bringing him back from Parliament to his residence is included.
- Security of government accommodation: A cell has been formed by the Delhi Police for the security of the residence of the Members of Parliament, this cell is responsible for the security of the residence of the MP during his absence.
Ex-members get only these facilities
There is a provision to give 25 thousand rupees per month to former MP of Lok Sabha. If the MP has been a member before, then he is given 2 thousand extra on the basis of every year. Ex-member can travel alone in 2nd AC free of charge. They will continue to get health benefits under the Central Government Health Scheme.
