Pod taxi scheme has been proposed for Haridwar, the argument of Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation is that the pod taxi project is necessary in view of the ever-increasing crowd in Haridwar. Let us know what is a pod taxi and which countries already have this arrangement.
What is POD Taxi?
Pod taxis are like an electric car that runs without a driver. In a way, it is a small car which runs automatically and can take people from one place to another very fast. About 8 passengers can sit in the pod taxi at a time and 13 can stand and travel.
How will it run without a driver?
Pod taxi does not have a driver, it is operated from a single place, but in terms of security it is divided into three different levels. In the first level, it is fed in the pod taxi that where it has to reach and when it has to stop. Care is taken that there is sufficient distance between two pods going on the same route. The passengers sitting in the second level can be given instructions from the central control system if needed.
It has an automatic vehicle protection system. There will be sensors in it which will send a message to the control room in case of any danger and stop all the pods wherever they are. On the third level, every pod taxi will need a Proceed signal before departure. This signal will be given separately to each pod.
This metro service runs on high pillars
Pod taxi is also a type of Metro service which comes under Metro Corporation, like Metro it is run on pillars in crowded markets. According to UKMRC public relations officer Gopal Sharma, the proposed pod taxi will be of 600 to 800 mm diameter, which will run on 6 meter high poles. A 4.5 meter wide path will be required for the movement of pod taxis.
This service is running in London
Pod taxi service first started in London, where it has been working since 2010 at Heather Airport. It provides service for 22 hours in London, it is considered one of the best transport services in London. Its work is also going on in full swing in China, there is a possibility of starting pod taxi by this year. Apart from this, discussions have been held on running pod taxis in many places in India, although Uttarakhand government has first proposed it for Haridwar.
why protest
Pod taxi project is being opposed in Haridwar. In fact, pod taxi project is proposed here on four corridors including Bharat Mata Mandir to Sitapur, DAV School to Ganeshpuram. People protesting argue that the pod taxi scheme will worsen the traffic situation on the already narrow roads. However, according to a TOI report, the UKMRC’s argument is that the distance between the pillars made for pod taxis will be 10 to 20 meters, this will not affect the traffic significantly.
