blood cancer Every year in the month of September to increase awareness and understanding about world blood cancer awareness month is organized. This year’s theme is ‘Close the Care Gap’. This means that the difficulties faced during the care of cancer patients can be understood and necessary steps can be taken to overcome them.
Studies done so far show that in the cases of blood cancer, India comes third after America and China. More than 70 thousand men and women are affected by blood cancer in the country. The ever-increasing cases of blood cancer have become a matter of serious concern for the public health administrators in India.
Donor Request Management at DKMS BMST Foundation India Dr. Nitin Agarwal interacted with Tv9 on the occasion of this day. He told how stem cell transplant gives blood cancer patients a second chance to live.
Blood cancer cases come more in men
Cases of blood cancer (including leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma) are more common in men than in women. Childhood leukemia accounts for about 25 percent of all cancers in children. In most cases of blood cancer, the process of normal blood cell growth is disrupted due to the uncontrolled growth of an abnormal type of blood cell.
Blood cancer is one of the most common causes of death. Apart from this, about one lakh people are found suffering from blood cancers like lymphoma (64 percent), leukemia (25 percent) and multiple myeloma (11 percent) every year.
Dr. Aggarwal said, ‘These abnormal blood cells (blood cells) or cancer cells prevent your blood from doing many things like fighting infection or stopping bleeding.’
Blood accounts for eight percent of the total body weight.
Explain that about eight percent of the total weight in the body is blood, which plays an important role in doing all the functions of the body. In fact, when blood circulates in your vascular system, it supplies oxygen, nutrients, hormones and antibodies to all organs.
Dr. Aggarwal said, ‘Blood cancer affects the formation and functioning of blood cells. Most blood cancers begin in the bone marrow, where blood is made. Stem cells in the bone marrow mature and develop into three types of blood cells, which are red blood cells (red blood cells), white blood cells (white blood cells) and platelets.
cancer treatment method
The main methods of treatment in cases of blood cancer include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and stem cell transplant. Dr. Aggarwal said, ‘The treatment of blood and bone marrow cancer depends on the type of cancer, age of the patient, how fast the cancer is growing and where the cancer is spreading etc. High-dose radiotherapy or chemotherapy has an effect not only on cancer cells, but also on normal cells. Due to this, the growth of cells is slow or they are destroyed.
The standard treatment is stem cell transplantation
This standard treatment has been used in many cases of leukemia, myeloma and lymphoma etc. to help patients recover from the disease of blood cancer.
Dr. Aggarwal explained, ‘Blood stem cells are produced in the bone marrow and can become any type of blood cells according to the need of the body. Stem cells continue to divide and mature into different types of blood cells. They keep taking the place of old and worn out blood cells in the body.
Stem cell transplantation (SCT), sometimes referred to as a bone marrow transplant, is a procedure in which healthy stem cells are given to a patient to replace damaged stem cells. It can be used to restore healthy bone marrow in patients suffering from leukemia. Actually, stem cells help to increase the growth of new bone marrow and restore the immune system.
Are there different types of stem cells transplant?
In a stem cell transplant, healthy stem cells are taken from a person’s blood or bone marrow. For the transplant to be successful, the donated stem cells need to carry a special genetic marker, known as human leukocyte antigen (HLA). It is similar to that of a transplant patient.
Dr. Aggarwal finally said, ‘In such cases, the help of a close family member is taken, whose tissues are similar or almost the same as the patient’s tissues. After this, stem cells are transplanted to the patient. This method is called allogeneic transplant. It is also possible to have the state cells removed from their own body and get them later after any damaged or damaged cells have been removed. This method is called autologous transplant.
