‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is releasing today i.e. on 30 September in cinemas in five languages - Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. However, people living in Canada will not be able to watch the Tamil version of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’. On Thursday, September 29, distribution company KW Talkies announced that multiplex series Landmark had decided not to release the film due to “receiving threats”. ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is a period drama, directed by Mani Ratnam.
Tamil version will not release in Canada
KW Talkies took to Twitter to inform fans that the Tamil version of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ will not be released in Canadian cinemas. The company had tied up with Landmark to screen it at 20 locations. However, the multiplex chain decided to ‘reconsider’ the decision because of the threat.
Theater owner called it unfortunate and shameful
In the statement, he further said, “It is very unfortunate and shameful that the country’s biggest film series will not show this epic and eagerly anticipated film on its screens. Tamil movie lovers in Canada deserve better. Our hands are tied as the biggest exhibitors are not accepting our request for the Tamil version. The exhibitors and their film buyers will not commit without the assurance that nothing bad will happen. Whoever did this vandalism and sent these threats, he has done a great loss to the community.

People have high hopes from this Mani Ratnam film. It took a long time to make this film. This film was to be made long back, in which Kamal Haasan was going to be seen but this film could not be made at that time.
‘Ponniyin Selvan’ made in a budget of 500 crores

The two-part franchise has reportedly been shot on a budget of Rs 500 crore, making it one of Lyca’s most ambitious projects. Chiyan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Shobhita Dhulipala, Jairam and Kishore are going to be seen in the lead roles in this film. The film is releasing a day after Dhanush’s ‘Nane Varuven’. The sequel to ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is expected to hit the screens 9 months after the first part.
