An action hero director, Anirudh Iyer firmly believes in presenting this weird tale of revenge in a unique way. His storytelling and direction have managed to grab attention throughout the story. The script of the film is laced with some great one-liners and moves that leave you in splits. The entire first half moves at a brisk pace with one engaging episode after another. From the whole style of setting the story in India, to the airplane block with Akshay Kumar and finally, the cat and mouse chase between humans, police and Bhura in London – the script keeps you hooked.
While the second part too has some solid moments, especially the climax, however, it might get mixed reactions from the audience. The background score front is a big win for the team as it is upbeat and in sync with the pace and mood of the film. The action scenes are also surprisingly well designed, well shot and well written, as they are not just additions but actually take the story forward. One of the biggest high points of the film is Akshay Kumar’s 5 minute appearance as it will surely make the house roll with laughter. Her expressions are enough to elicit laughter and moreover, her dialogue with Ayushmann in Bidaai is one of the best scenes of the year.
What doesn’t work?
The script of N Action Hero gets a bit repetitive in the second half. Also, there are some moments where you are forced to think why the characters are not killing each other? In reality, the film also derails for a short duration, but the director has done well to pull all the strings and bring the story back into the groove with an extended climax. Let the whole underworld track not work in the opening few frames, and the whole way of satirising the current sad state of the Indian media is stretched beyond imagination. While the makers are correct in their projection of TRPs, the entire track could have been trimmed.
Had it not been for the extended climax, there would have been a fringe of shortcomings, especially as the twist in the story makes you look beyond some logical loopholes. While most of the emotions are desi and relatable, the climax may not be everyone’s cup of tea, which is preventing the film from reaching out. The reactions may be polarized till the last 30 minutes, but it will surely be appreciated by a large section of the audience post its digital release. Malaika Arora’s dance number does not add any value to the film and is a poor entertainment set to a prestigious musical.
performance
Ayushmann Khurrana has stepped into the action space for the first time and this is his biggest hero till date in any film. He sports the attitude of a superstar in the initial frames and changes his body language as the story progresses. He brings a lot of color to the character and passes the test of getting into the slightly macho space with flying colours. Jaideep Ahlawat is brilliant as Bhura and some of his straight forward dialogues define what dark comedy really stands for. The anger beneath him turns into some of the funniest moments in the film. Akshay Kumar’s cameo is hilarious to say the least and it is a pleasure to finally see him in an urban avatar this year doing what he does best – comedy. Jitendra Hooda and Hiten Patel do well in their limited roles. The rest of the ensemble cast does well in their limited roles.
Verdict
Ek Action Hero is an intelligently written action thriller, in which the director follows his firm belief of striking the right balance in the genre with some humor and weird scenarios. The struggle is repeated in the second half, but the finale saves the day for this Ayushmann Khurrana film. It’s definitely worth-a-watch this weekend.
In such a situation, clowns in the form of famous anchors of media channels will also be shown in between on this news, seeing which you will keep laughing that country wants to know… In the very next scene, the film will become serious again. So go with it thinking that you are just going to have fun, not watch a great movie, you might as well have fun.
