According to him, not only the sowing area of wheat has increased this year. Along with this, farmers have used better quality seeds this time which can give better yield even in rising temperature. ICAR IIWBR is the apex body of India for wheat crop. In the last season, due to premature rise in temperature, the wheat crop was affected, due to which the production was affected.
how much production can increase
According to director Gyanendra Singh, India can produce 112 million tonnes of wheat this year, which will be five million tonnes more than last year. He said that this year farmers have used DBW 187, DBW 303, DBW 222, DBW 327 and DBW 332 which give more yield and the crops produced from them can tolerate high temperature. On the other hand, with the increase in area, there is hope of better production. According to Agriculture Ministry data, the area under wheat sowing has increased by 5.36 percent year-on-year to 211.62 lakh hectares in the first two months of the rabi season, with Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh reporting an increase in the area under wheat cultivation. The sowing of wheat, the main crop of rabi season, starts in October and it is harvested in March-April. According to the latest data of the ministry, wheat has been sown in 211.62 lakh hectare so far in the current rabi season, while in the year-ago period, this area was 200.85 lakh hectare.
Price 30 to 40 percent above MSP
At present, the market prices of wheat remain 30 to 40 percent above the MSP. At present, the price of wheat in most parts of the country is between Rs 27 to 29 per kg while the MSP is Rs 20.15 per kg. This year the procurement of wheat by the government has also fallen considerably. Due to getting higher prices in the market, the farmers gave priority in selling wheat to the private sector, which affected the government procurement. However, due to the possibility of wheat production being above the previous levels this year and the prospects of the world food supply coming back on track, it is estimated that wheat prices may soften by the next season.
