The Industries Department has notified around 20 QCOs from 2020. The surprising thing is that only 18 to 19 QCOs were issued between the years 2000 to 2019.

After toys, now the Central Government is preparing to curb the import of Chinese Fan and Smart Mete. The government can soon issue a Quality Control Order on both the goods.
Earlier, the Commerce & Industry Ministry had successfully curbed the import of toys through strict quality control. A government official said that we are considering bringing a quality control order for smart meters and ceiling fans. This will benefit our own industry and consumers.
Import of fan and smart meter
India’s ceiling fan imports are expected to increase by 132 per cent to an estimated $6.22 million in FY22. Out of this, the import from China was worth $5.99 million. India’s smart meter imports during FY22 stood at $3.1 million, of which about $1.32 million came from China.
After the quality control order was issued in 2020, the import of toys fell by 70 percent in the last three years. In FY 2019, where the import of toys was $ 371 million, it was reduced to $ 110 million in FY 2022. During the same period, toy imports from China fell by 80 percent, or $59 million.
trade deficit with china
The ever-increasing trade deficit with China has always been a matter of concern, prompting India to take measures to curb non-essential imports from the neighboring country. During the April-September period of fiscal year 2023, exports to China are set to decline by 36.2 per cent to $7.8 billion, while imports rise by 23.6 per cent to $52.4 billion, leading to a record trade deficit of $44.6 billion.
We don’t care about quality
The officials of the Industry Department are also checking the standards of all those products which have the potential of the domestic industry. We are trying to introduce quality control orders wherever product manuals, standardization processes and testing labs are available. This is a big exercise that we are doing. Although,
The official said that the domestic industry does not always support quality control. He said, unfortunately, the problem in India today is that whenever you want to set standards through quality control orders, the domestic industry opposes it because they have never paid attention to quality. The problem is that we do not develop our own technology.
20 quality quality control orders in two years
Since the pandemic, the government began implementing quality controls to curb imports of non-essential goods and aid the domestic industry for greater capacity. The Industries Department has notified around 20 QCOs from 2020. The surprising thing is that only 18 to 19 QCOs were issued between the years 2000 to 2019.
From 2020, BIS has approved steel and iron products, chemicals, fertilizers, polymers and textiles, air conditioners, plugs and sockets, domestic gas stoves, transparent float glass, pressure cookers, cables, aluminum foil, toys, copier paper, cattle feed, foot wear. Notify QCO for helmet, sewing machine etc. Speaking at the event in September, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that even the country’s poorest citizen deserves good quality goods and the tradition of not compromising on quality has to be followed.
