Domestic healthcare sector on target of hackers
The recent cyber attack on AIIMS shows that India’s healthcare system How big is the threat related to hacking? According to a report by cyber security think-tank Cyberpeace Foundation and security consultant Autobot Infosec Pvt Ltd, India’s healthcare sector witnessed 1.9 million cyber attacks till November 28 this year. The report states that these attacks were 41,181 unique ip address were made from, whose source was in Vietnam, Pakistan and China.
Last week, India’s premier government hospital, AIIMS in New Delhi was hit by a major cyber attack, forcing the institute to shut down several of its servers and switch to manual operations. However, AIIMS denied the reports which claimed that the hackers had demanded a ransom of ₹200 crore. AIIMS has announced plans to digitize all services by April 2023.
According to Tata Capital-backed security firm Indusface, India was the second most targeted country in terms of attacks on the healthcare sector. According to the company, out of 1 million attacks on its healthcare customers every month in 2022, 278,000 took place in India. About 80 per cent of these attacks targeted the HR Management System (HRMS), customer service portal, ticketing system and developer tools, the firm told Mint.
Ashish Tandon, founder and CEO of Indusface, said the attack on AIIMS’ servers is extremely unfortunate as it affects healthcare delivery to those in urgent need of care. Along with this, it tells the importance of cyber security in healthcare service. The data, released by the Cyberpeace Foundation, has been obtained through its own E-Kavach programme, which uses specialized sensors to analyze cyber attacks and can also classify these attacks by location.
Along with this, the Cyberpeace report states that the main objective of these attacks is to infiltrate the healthcare company’s network and try to extort money. The company’s sensors have identified 1527 specific payloads that were used to infect computers.
