To implement the rule of 6 airbags in the car, crores of airbags will be required. In such a situation, does India have the capacity to produce about 18 million airbags. Reports have claimed that there may be a delay of up to 18 months in the implementation of the 6 airbag rule in India.
Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has set October 1 as the date to implement the rule regarding mandatory 6 airbags in cars. But the big question is whether the government will be able to implement the rule of 6 airbags in the car from October 1. According to reports, industry sources say that India does not have the capacity to produce sufficient number of airbags. Therefore, it is possible that there may be a delay of up to 18 months in the implementation of the 6 airbag rule. To implement this rule, about 18 million airbags will be required in the country.
Draft issued in January 2022
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a draft notification of the rule making 6 airbags mandatory in January this year. In this, all the car manufacturing companies of the country have been asked to follow the proposed guidelines from October 1, 2022. However, there has been a mixed reaction from the Indian automobile industry regarding this rule.
18 million airbags needed
After the implementation of dual airbags from January 2022, a total of 6 million airbags were required in the country. In India, 15 percent of the car vehicles already have 6 airbags. But to install 6 airbags in the remaining 85 percent of the vehicles, 10 million airbags will be required. Therefore, a total manufacturing capacity of 18 million airbags would be required to meet the needs of the entire car market in India.
Impact on the small car market
The 6 airbag rule in India has also brought a potential threat to the small car market. According to reports, after the implementation of the 6 airbag rule, the prices of the budget segment i.e. small car may increase. Therefore, hatchbacks like Maruti Suzuki Alto and Renault Kwid can see an increase in prices. These cars have the highest market share in India.
